z/VM 4.3 and higher have a feature called Signal Shutdown, which will send a Linux guest a shutdown signal when a command is issued or when z/VM itself is shutdown. For SLES8, you need at least Service Pack 2 (I think). Changes to /etc/inittab are also required.
