1) Make absolutely certain you are running on a machine with IEEE floating
point support.

2) Make sure you are running in the smallest virtual machine you can get
away with, with plenty of vdisk swap disks.

3) Learn to like/use text mode whenever absolutely possible.

4) Use twm or a Very Simple window manager.

5) Turn off all the special effects in Gnome.

All that gingerbread in Gnome costs mucho cycles, and X does tons and tons
of floating point math.  I don't remember what kind of system you have, but
you may just not have enough horsepower.
