Another point about doing GNU Grep and DiffUtils on OVM: There's the "use it or lose it" effect. OpenVM is a *great* implementation of POSIX. (Not *all* of POSIX, but much of it.) We need to make more use of it. If we don't, it may go away. That would be bad.
I know that IBM development wants to spend less money on new CMS work, and certainly less money on additional work on OpenExtensions for CMS. I notice the withdrawal of Java for VM. Not being a fan of Java, I was not sorry to see that one go. Well ... maybe a little. But OVM will follow Java if there's no evidence that people use it. Sir Santa can ho-ho-ho about how wonderful OpenVM is. (He actually *uses* it, with the delight of a toy maker.) But Chuckie will be quick to ruin our child's play with the reality of developmental costs. If one were to get any open source tools (such as GNU Grep and/or GNU DiffUtils) built for OVM, that would be something which runs on OpenVM but does not require as much IBM effort to maintain. (Or, IBM could justify the cost because the reward would come back on other IBM platforms, not just on CMS.) -- R; ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For LINUX-390 subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: INFO LINUX-390 or visit http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?LINUX-390
