Do you mean tape marks between files are needed? Or shouldn't be there?
Should not be there in 3.0 and later versions of Hercules; Hercules changed tape handling in 3.0.
I moved the boot files over from the CD under Linux, but still got either full or partial failure (usually mounting the ramdisk root FS) till I reformatted the files to end on a 1K boundary, and removed the tape marks between files.
Yes, the files need to be blocksize 1K, no tape marks between them.
The really odd thing about it was that I went back and tried to boot the install kernel from my SLES8 setup, and got exactly the same problem, but I KNOW everything was left exactly as it was when I successfully installed SLES8. Of course, that was 2 or 3 versions of Hercules ago.
Tape handling did indeed change. I think it was between 2.17 and 3.0, but could have been 3.0 and 3.01.
One question bugging me though: Is the PARMFILE supposed to be in ASCII or EBCDIC? I tried it both ways, but I forget which finally worked. When I tried it under VM, it was in ASCII, but some old docs I found via Google search seem to imply it should be in EBCDIC. That's where I got the idea that the files should be even multiple of 1K.
Either way works. ASCII is obviously easier to work with on a Hercules host; EBCDIC on VM.
