Subject: Re: Re-IPL from backups
Ranga,
I saw your append on the Marist site. Be real careful with this. You will
IPL the RES pack that you point to
via the hardware address. However VM will use the WK1, WK2 ..... packs
that are at the lowest hardware address.
Even if I rename the volumes to something else? I was going to do this
from z/OS which sees these volumes but does not know about the datasets.
example:
800 510RES 900 510RES
801 510WK1 901 510WK1
802 510WK2 902 510WK2
In the above example if I IPL 800, VM will use 801 and 802
I was thinking more like:
800 X51RES 900 510RES
801 X51WK1 901 510WK1
802 X51WK2 902 510WK2
Will that not work if I IPL from 900?
If I IPL 900, VM will still use 801 and 802 since they have the lower
hardware address.
In order to have the IPL of 900 use the packs at address 901 and 902 you
will need to change
the names of the packs. You will also need to change the names of the
packs in the system config
file.
If I can do the afore-mentioned, then I should not have to touch anything
else, right?

John

Re-IPL from backups
I have snapped the RES, WRK and SPL volumes to another set of volumes. Now
I want to make sure that I can IPL from the backup volumes.
My thinking is:
Shutdown z/VM and the guests
Re-name volids for existing 510RES, WRK and SPL to something else.
Re-name volids of the backups to correspond to 510RES etc.
IPL from the new 510RES with appropriate address.
Will this work? Are there any gotchas?
