If you put LOGOFF there it will issue that command whether you're logged on or disconnected. What the rest of us were talking about is the 'SIGNAL SHUTDOWN' command on VM and others that use that interface. This triggers through /etc/inittab the shutdown command and special processing there tells VM when Linux is done and can be logged off. This only works when the virtual machine is disconnected.
