I suspect that your Windows server is running Active Directory. I think that
is why you don't have a workgroup. If you want to use Active Directory with
Samba you need version 3.x. Versions before 3.x don't support AD, so they need
a workgroup.

I may be completely wrong, since Microsoft changes the terminology every once
in a while.

Subject: configuring samba server

>From what I've read in multiple samba documentation, it tells me that I
must have a windows workgroup defined on my pc in order to connect to a
samba linux server from my windows XP pc.

We do not use workgroups, only domains (workgroup is blank on my pc).

If this is true, is there a way around this ?
