The concept of workgroups on SAMBA determines how authentication is handled. By giving the configuration a workgroup name (and it can be any random name - the default being WORKGROUP) you are telling SAMBA that user authentication will be done on that server. I have a client with several SAMBA Linux servers running all using the same workgroup name attached to by workstations without workgroups designated (because they use Active Directory and domain names).
