You do not need a workgroup defined, but there are some extra steps with
domains, depending on what variation of Windows domain you have running.


If you have NT-style domains, or you are running AD in mixed-mode (DCs
respond to both NTLM and AD), then as long as the workstation and server
are members of the same NTLM domain, you can use Samba 2 or 3 and it'll
work (configure the Samba server as a domain member as described in the
docs). 

If you have AD-style domains, then you'll need a minimum of Samba v3,
and you'll need to read the section in the Samba manual about
integrating the Samba server into a AD environment. There are some
restrictions, but it works essentially OK.
