Generally I would strongly recommend to vary the CHPIDs offline prior to
swap the cards minimizing related error recovery efforts when accidentally
catching an I/O operation in the middle ... regardless whether running
z/OS, z/VM, or Linux.
Without any specifics about the nature of your problems and the service
level you were running back then it is hard to judge whether you unveiled
a possible bug, though. Did you involve IBM or distributor service at that
time?
