I recall that on Feb 22nd I was indeed applying patches and the /usr filled up. I then went on to create an LVM (we did not have it because it was a playground for the admins) . It is quite possible that kernel update could have happened at that time. Thanks for the pointer. I will try mounting the boot and root on another Linux and do a zipl. Looks like "zipl -t <target> -p <parm file> -c <config> " can help me. Thanks again
