Init.d. And complain to the vendor about getting it right. There is no
excuse for modifying /etc/inittab these days -- it's error prone, and
screwups are hard to recover from. 

The example I wrote for Oracle is a good place to start for these
scripts -- it also gives you a way to control variables from tools like
