We drive the backup process from z/OS. I set up jobs that:

1) Signal shutdown to the VM linux guests via REXECD.
2) FORCE the VM guests.
3) Vary the guest volumes online to z/OS.
4) Snapshot the guest volumes. (We use FDR/Instant for snapshot/backup
purposes.)
5) Restart the VM guests.
6) Backup the snapped volumes.
7) Vary the drives back offline to z/OS when the backups are done.

Our scheduling package takes care of making sure everything is done in the
correct order.
