Why not use your Exchange server as the MTA? Configure the Linux email client to connect to port 25 on the Exchange server's IP address (or hostname, if you are set up to do that). We do emails from batch jobs on z/OS. We have a free software called XMITIP which knows the protocol and it just connects to port 25 on our MS Exchange box. I don't see any reason why this would not work with your Linux MTA.
The mail command on Linux doesn't implement smtp, it simply calls "sendmail" for the purpose. As for the memory footprint, I used to run sendmail on an 8 Mb 486. And, I disagree with Adam - there's a lot you can configure in sendmail, but not much you need to for this purpose: I find sendmail just working, for sendimg email on the local LAN whenever I install a RHEL clone or FC. About all you need to remember is to create an alias for root, and set MAILTO in your personal crontabs. mail delievery defaults to accounts on the local host; these changes address that. -- Cheers John -- spambait [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] Tourist pics http://portgeographe.environmentaldisasters.cds.merseine.nu/ do not reply off-list ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For LINUX-390 subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: INFO LINUX-390 or visit http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?LINUX-390
