Thanks for your reply.
Just curious how you got your root partition into an LVM. I tried to do
what you suggested but I got this error complaining that I did not have a
/boot partition. I suppose I would have to break up the first mod-9 into 2
mini-disks, one for /boot and the other for root, swap, var and tmp. Is
that the way you configured your system ?

Our "minimal" system installation here goes to two mod-9 devices. Root,
swap, var and tmp go to the first mod-9, broken into logical volumes using
LVM. /home and /opt go to the second mod-9. Additional volumes are added as
necessary for other requested paths.
This gives some breathing room to the system, and isolates the directories
likely to cause space problems into their own filesystems, so that you
won't
fill root.
This represents our minimum system; Our largest system, right now, covers
3/4 terabytes. (Used to be 72+ mod-9 devices. We recently migrated it to
mod-27 devices, all while the system was actively running. Gotta love
LVM...)
