When you are installing Debian and the list of optional programs to install 
comes, uncheck desktop.
Then you don't get Gnome installed.

That's certainly news to me.

A *default* Debian installation includes Gnome Desktop.  So he's not
wrong.  It's trivial to cut it down below there, though.
