A *default* Debian installation includes Gnome Desktop. So he's not
wrong. It's trivial to cut it down below there, though.
Yes, that's why it's trivial to cut it down.
Even a minimal stock Debian install can be trimmed a good deal
farther. SSLSERV is nearly as small as you can go without losing
major parts of core functionality; that's sort of as small as you can
*easily* get, and beyond there you start looking at systems with
different libcs, lots of statically-linked busybox links, missing
bits like cron, and so forth.
