I know someone who runs multiple SAP systems in production with 16 GB
of swap space each, primarily to satisfy the vendor requirements.
Because of CP limitations they come in portions of 2 GB, so only the
first one is being used to swap, if any. He monitors the usage of the
VDISKs. This works.
You can imagine he was pretty upset when some support person insisted
he would go allocate real disk instead, because that was better (and
since he was on z/VM 5.1 then, we knew it would be very much worse). I
probably need to rephrase my earlier comment in that Linux swap on
real disk is good for two things: to slow down Linux and to increase
the bonus of your favorite storage sales person.
