Hi, George.
What the real implication of having a "ur" (unit record) device driver
available for Linux now is that Linux guests, running in the IBM z/VM
environment, can now easily send data back and forth with other virtual
machines (running either Linux or any other operating system that
understands ur device, like CMS, and z/OS....) *without having the
TCP/IP network up and running*. Linux will now be able to play a bit
more nicely in the z/VM environment.
z/VM and z/OS have for years employed the concepts of virtual card
readers, card punches and printers and the ability to spool one virtual
machine's card punch to another virtual machine's card reader as a very
efficient way of sending data between virtual machines. The sending and
receiving virtual machines don't even have to be hosted on the same z/VM
system; if RSCS (Remote Spooling Communications Subsystem) is installed,
they can be on different systems thousands of miles apart. The two
virtual machines don't even have to be logged on at the same time for
them to exchange data.
Hope this helps.

David,
It sounds like an interesting interface, but I'm curious:
Can you tell me what the implication of this is?
What type of features/functions would this assist in?
thanks.

Subject: VM unit record device driver submitted to Linus

Worthy of note...
Included in a recent list of patches submitted for 2.6 kernels:
z/VM Unit record character device driver to access VM reader, punch,
and printer.
Not available in any distribution yet (coming soon for testing/unstable
in Debian etch), but very promising.
