I have implemented disconnected vswitches in an lpar instead of guest lans on several occasions. A vswitch has better security controls, like allowing an ESM such as RACF to allow or prevent virtual membership based on rules. An ESM can also provide rules based access for VLAN membership. David

For communications between virtual machines within the same z/VM LPAR, virtual machines connected to the same VSwitch can talk directly to each other (still no wires).
