It wasn't intuitive but the steps I took were ( I think) :

1) Gen 2 chpids as FCP with 64 devices each (picked 64 for no good
reason).
2) Activate NPIV on the switch first.
3) Activate NPIV on the chpid.
4) Attach device to VM guest ( q fcp now shows the NPIV WWPN)
5) In linux issued zfcp_host_configure 0.0.xxxx 1 to bring the device
online in linux. This caused the device to log into the switch and the
san folks could see the wwpn.
6) Used YAST to add the device (HARDWARE==>ZFCP) using the target
clarion port wwpn and lun number. (device is unusable at this point)
7) Clarion can now be configured to provision the LUN (zoned ?)
8) Delete the device from YAST
9) Readd the device to YAST
10) Finally was able to format and mount the filesystem.
