Why?. because we have the z/VM and all Linux guests on 3390-3 volumes. And
for some reason our previous administrator defined the LVM on a 3390-9,
maybe he ran out of 3390-3.
Anyway our current backup job using FLASHCOPY does not include mixing
device volumes. We do volume dumps using flashcopy and currently are not
backing up the LVM volumes - which is at 47gb.
My dasd administrator says we can't mix devices with flashcopy.

First of all, why??? Are you into pain and suffering? If you're trying to
spread things over more subchannel addresses to improve I/O performance,
you'd be far better off using PAV (Parallel Access Volumes) with your
existing volumes.
Regardless, look at http://linuxvm.org/Info/HOWTOs/movefs.html on how to go
about doing this.
