I have written FORTRAN, Rexx and SAS programs for the reduction of
accounting and performance data. Luckily this was all for internal
review not for real charge-back, no money changed hands. Management only
likes my programs when the numbers match their predetermined ideas of
who is taking how much of the system. If charge-back is ever required, I
will insist that an outside product be purchased and its use written
into any service level agreement.

I use accounting data mostly because it is the easiest to play with in
Rexx and Pipelines. I would prefer that all of my accounting and
performace processing b done from the monitor data. And all NEW data
should be put into the monitor stream for processing. With the new
STRUCTURE stage in the latest level of Pipelines, I think the processing
of Performance Toolkit accumulation files will be a bit easier to do.

Perhaps more customers will get around to using the accumulation files
of ALL monitor reduction products if the customer had more control over
what data gets saved and where.

And we should definitely get more control over the data records that
actually get passed into the monitor reduction and reporting process.
More like the record by record selection for SMF recording in your
favorite other operating system. Not just record families like turning
on Sample or Event data.

Thank you for all of you.
I think that this redpaper would be helpful for me right now. However
as many of you mentioned, it'll be needed some other product for
performance monitoring for our customers using zLinux images on z/VM,
I think.

Anyway, I wonder that how do the customers using zLinux for their
business in other countries monitor or charge-back their z/VM and
zLinux. Are almost of the customers really using some of product for
performance monitoring like ESALPS/Performance Toolkit? If so, how
many linux images are running? Or are there some of customers using
in-house program for monitoring/charge-back?
