The whys are pretty straightforward. 1. If your root file system fills up (runs out of space) your system dies. 2. Up until recently, resizing your root file system required application downtime. 3. Having everything in your root file system prevents potential sharing of file systems across guests. The hows are also pretty straightforward. 1. During the installation process, use the various "expert" modes to set it up. (It really doesn't require an expert.) 2. After installation, look at http://linuxvm.org/Info/HOWTOs/movefs.html It's far easier to do it during installation. It's also far easier to do it during installation via AutoYaST or kickstart.
