I know its disconcerting, but this zLinux is only being used as a basis to
start of a POC idea.

Ill look into both DDR and TSM then :)

A bit disconcerting that a backup was taken but the restore process isn't
known.

At the simplest level, you can DDR the DASD for VM/Linux to tape or DASD..
then use DDR to restore it. For Linux - the guest should be logged off if
you want to ensure the backup will result in a working system when
restored.

A better solution might be to use a TSM client on your Linux guest to backup
the Linux filesystem at the file level. DDR is only going to provide you
with physical copies, so restoring a single file that Linux needs will
require you to restore the disks making up the filesystem, mount them, and
pull of the files you need.

As far as whether it needs to be restored to the same disks -- no - with
z/VM you can restore to other disks and then alter the directory entry for
the Linux guest to point to that DASD, using the same virtual addresses.
Be aware that you need need to use the same disk 'addresses' unless you're
going to modify modprobe.conf (RH) or zipl.conf (SuSE) to include those
address ranges.
