You probably do need to document the limitation and have a useful error message. But if it hurts, then don't do it. I think we can agree that CMS mini disks of 20 GB is beyond common usage and intended purpose of cmsfs. In fact, CMS will show its limitations as well when you try to do something with it. When looking at where to put your energy, I have a dozen other things that seem far more significant to make the platform work...
