Maybe that's the reason the JVM unzips all the files into private memory before use ;-) I think the really big stuff does not rely on the default of the distribution. Things like Oracle come with their own setup instructions for example to set ulimit -v to allow for 4G mapped, I guess you need to raise that even further when you grow the SGA beyond that.
