In the next two or three weeks we will have to move from our current z9 to a z114 and are trying to look for all of the "gotchas" involved.
This is supposed to be a "pull-push" type of change with only the underlying hardware changing to start. Our current VM is our first experience with VM. We have never migrated a VM lpar to another machine( built new VM lpars on another machine, but never migrated). We are not going to change lpar definitions with one exception - we will be adding 1 IFL to the VM lpar. We won't be changing versions of zVM or Linux ( or z/OS on the other partitions ) or any application software. All consoles, network, and storage will be unplugged from the old box and plugged into the appropriate ports on the new box. All guests will, obviously, be shut down and restarted on the new hardware after zVM is up ( VM 5.4 ). Our storage guy asked about NPIV and WWPN names - all I could do was give him my best dumb look ( I'm a dba, not a sysadmin or systems programmer ). So, what should we expect ? I don't think networking or CKD dasd will be an issue but I have no idea how the SAN will react to having a different mainframe replacing the one it knows.
