There was a time when even the minimal overhead of z/VM was enough to make running z/OS as a guest ill-suited for production. As z/VM has been enhanced to work better with large virtual machines and with the speed of z10+ machines, it has finally moved into the realm of "fast enough." The old "not recommended" rule no longer applies. These days, the decision to run z/OS in production on z/VM needs to be made based on measurements, and configuration and capability requirements (e.g. access to real CF).
