One possibility that occurred to me that would cause this "page in only to
release" behavior is if Linux has the pages to be released on a linked
list, and the linked list is maintained with pointers in the pages
themselves, rather than an outside structure.  If that's the case, then
Linux has to reference the forward pointer in the page, causing it to be
read in, before it can be released.  I've asked our Linux folks if this is
possibly the case, and if so, what might be done to address it.  But it's
definitely not z/VM CP reading in guest data pages only to release them,
that's just not what the code does.
