Marcy:

Good information on the links sent, thanks. Like Mark said, we are looking to
edit grub at boot time. For example

Welcome to GRUB!

                            GNU GRUB version 2.02

Use the ^ and v keys to select which entry is highlighted. Press

enter to boot the selected OS, `e' to edit the commands before

      booting or `c' for a command-line.

  *(1) SLES 12-SP5
   (2) Advanced options for SLES 12-SP5

The highlighted entry will be executed automatically in 8s.7s 6s 5s 4s 2

                            GNU GRUB version 2.02

Use the ^ and v keys to select which entry is highlighted. Press

enter to boot the selected OS, `e' to edit the commands before

booting or `c' for a command-line. ESC to return previous menu.

  *(3) SLES 12-SP5, with Linux 4.12.14-122.150-default
   (4) SLES 12-SP5, with Linux 4.12.14-122.136-default

e

                            GNU GRUB version 2.02

Minimum Emacs-like screen editing is supported. '^i' lists

completions. Type '^x' to boot, '^c' for a command-line or

'^[' to discard edits and return to the GRUB menu.
setparams 'SLES 12-SP5, with Linux 4.12.14-122.150-default'

                  set gfxpayload=text
                  insmod gzio
                  echo 'Loading Linux 4.12.14-122.150-default ...'
                  linux /boot/image-4.12.14-122.150-default root=UUID\

 =ab8b3259-0d09-4abd-b0a3-85158d8e90a1 ipv6.disable=1 audit=1 apparmor=1 se\

 curity=apparmor audit_backlog_limit=8192 hvc_iucv=8 TERM=dumb vmpoff=LOGOF\

 F vmhalt=LOGOFF
                  echo 'Loading initial ramdisk ...'
                  initrd /boot/initrd-4.12.14-122.150-default

The Unix person wants me to append another parameter after the LOGOFF parm when
grub screen appears at boot time.

I found this link

https://documentation.suse.com/sles/15-SP4/html/SLES-all/cha-grub2.html

Section 18.4 has keys under 3270 screen, but I tried and doesn't work.

CAUTION EXTERNAL EMAIL: DO NOT open attachments or click on links from unknown
senders or unexpected emails.

You can pass things to grub on the IPL command using the PARM statement. I
just had to do that when I needed to validate a systemd timing problem with a
kernel parm. It's tricky with the lower case stuff.

Is that what you are trying to do?

I'm pretty sure they're asking about the ability of using grub itself to change
things, when the grub menu is displayed. If so, then there is supposed to be a
way to do it, but I never really dug into it well enough to figure it out
properly. There are a couple of hints given on the screen about which keys to
use, etc., but after that I wasn't initially able to get any further, and had
to move on to other tasks.

If they're not talking about that, and are asking about using some form of
editor to modify the config file itself, then you're correct. I really wish the
old UTS editor that was made to work with 3270/3215 terminals had been open
sourced before the company went under, but that never happened.
