The heatsink goes on the front.

I just grabbed the slot-1 celeron that I have, and it has "intel"
"celeron" on two corners on the back, and a big chip and several
capacitors, resistors on the front. The big heatsink and the fan goes
on the front side, the metal clip on the back.

The heatsink will be touching the center metal part of the chip, and
leave a tenth of an inch clearance for the board on the rest.
