I'm thinking of setting up a web kiosk.
(user accounts/security is not an issue)
Is Netscape on linux as stable as Netscape on NT ?
And do the minor usability issues
alt-TAB between windows,
TAB to URL entry box
work reliably on Netscape Linux ?
My past experience with Linux was that the
networking (tcp/ip, http) was great, but
the user experience was poor because when switching between
an ssh window, and Xterm and Netscape, when switching to
Netscape, the keyboard would not be recognized
so eg I could not use the search box of the web page
I just downloaded.

I had a look. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this software for
creating web-based presentations? All very powerful, but not at all
what I'm looking for - I want to give seminars or talks at conferences
using my laptop and a projector. Presenter has to be viewed in a Web
browser, whereas I need each slide to be full-screen. Being HTML, it
will look different in different browsers or screen resolutions so I'd
need to bring my own hardware anyway - which rather defeats the point
of having a portable presentation format. Netscape is not as bloated
as Staroffice, but it's big enough to make my laptop pause every now
and then. And, most importantly (this is the point of the whole
thread - see the title) there is no facility for including postscript
figures, not to mention equations.

When computers were selling for $900, Microsoft was collecting
as much as $300 for the Windows/Office/Excel/Tools bundle. When
the prices dropped to $600, Microsoft was collecting $200 for
Windows/Works/Expedia/Money/Games package. In both cases, Microsoft
also collected revenue and/or other benifits worth about $100 per
machine for Internet, At one time, Compaq was paying $350 for
hardware. Microsoft was still collecting standard rates (about $200),
and computer wholesale prices had dropped to $500. Compaq was actually
losing money every time it sold a machine. Microsoft wasn't terribly
sympathetic since Jon Maddog Hall, Linux advocate and guru, was a
compaq employee and getting a great deal of publicity.
> >Is that true?
> >I haven't seen any computers offered for 30% less without Windows.
Actually, prior to the expiration of the 1st year Windows 98 license,
there were several magazines offering "bare bones" machines. These
were machines which contained everything BUT a hard drive. Since
there was no hard drive, there was no Microsoft software to install.
The price of these machines, along with a disk drive in a separate
box was nearly 1/3 less than the price of the same machine with
the software installed. Ironically, the companies knew that
these machines were being used as Linux machines and they were
actually making more profit than they did selling the assembled
machine with softare for 35% more.
> The fact that no discount is offered

Moore's Law states that Computer performance will double and/or
the prices of the hardware will drop by 50% every 18 months to
two years. Meanwhile, Microsoft collects the same prices in 1999
that it collected in 1987.
Microsoft knew all along that Open Source software would eventually
be adopted simply because, in all other sectors of the industry,
as the price of the hardware decreased, and the cost of proprietary
software increased, the only way to compete was to give up the
proprietary software. The OEMs knew this too. When Linux arrived,
and Novell purchased the rights to UNIX and started offering it
for $200/machine, Microsoft knew that it's days were numbered. They
managed to beat UNIX and Linux through a series of contracts designed
to "lock-out" competitors. They tried to maximize their profit
through bundling of applications and publishing service packs that
adversely impacted competitor applications.
Microsoft claims that they did this "in the interest of the consumer".
Yet UNIX customers thrived while Windows customers had to deal with
overruns, system failures, and promises of an operating system yet
to come after nearly 10 years since Gates first announced "a better
UNIX than UNIX". In a way, Gates kept his promise. By uniting
the UNIX professionals against Microsoft, Linux got support that
it might never have gotten had UNIX not been locked out, had
Microsoft not decided to try to make NT a server. Instead, Linux
became the very best of both UNIX and Windows. Linux isn't
quite as good as windows, because it doesn't have the same
third party support that Windows 9x currently enjoys. But it
combines the ease of use of Windows and the power and flexibility
of UNIX.

Recently I've been offered a short contract as a Linux system admin in the

going pay rate for such a job. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Don't mix up the KDEs.
KDE-1.x had a proprietary DnD protocol, whereas KDE-2.x uses the
standard XDND.
kfm is KDE-1.x (i.e. dead), konqueror is its replacement for KDE-2.x
(And for those who wonder, XDND has nothing to do with Xlib, it's much
more recent
than that).

I don't know for sure if gimp uses XDND, but if it doesn't, it should
;-)

Actually, he probably does. It's just he seems to spend all his time
here bad-mouthing Linux and its community. It's ironic that while he
claims he has dropped all this 'zealot crap', he's just gone from being
a pro-Linux zealot to an anti-Linux zealot.

The irony that IE would still have won the browser war of MS hadn't
pulled off that bundl^H^H^H^H^Hintegration crap is rather amusing.
That is, until Netscape pulled their fingers out and developed Mozilla.
Then again, with the current NS6 UI, I'd say they're practically giving
the rest of their marketshare to IE.

A 'desktop OS' boots in less than 5 minutes. A 'desktop OS' takes less
than 5 minutes to shut down. Nuff said.

Tim, you were expressing disbelief about the "count them" seven steps
of LaTeX document creation --- where the seven steps included the
typing of the text, the *creation* of the diagrams, and so on.
Now, if "count them" seven steps (of which only 5 are really required,
anyway) is something only a linux geek could handle, then surely the
mighty Windows User can do all this in less steps....

Having seen several machines crash because of bad hardware (once from
bad memory chips, and once from what we ended up suspecting was a
dodgy motherboard but we're not sure - we just replaced all the
hardware inside the case out of frustration) I'd say that computers in
that situation pretty much *define* unusable.
