You have to watch those rebates.

I applied for my linksys rebate back in October from onvia.com
for buying their linksys 10/100 PCI card and their 10/100 hub and still
haven't gotten anything yet!

I hope I didn't get ripped off by them.

The Windows 9x setup doesn't format your partition. You must have a
pre-formated one.

Removing the MBR isn't the same as deleting all your partitions. You can
restore the MBR without losing any data, you can't just recover all your
deleted data.

Ahh, the precursor to the venerable Commodore 64 (not VIC64).

Video display was a whopping 22 columns!

Ummm... the VIC-20 had a 64k address space (the vast majority being mapped
ROM), but only 3k of usable, unextended RAM. Yes, that is right, it had only 3k
of usable RAM.

You could purchase 16k expansion board for the blasted thing, bumping the total
usable RAM up to a whopping 19k. I had the 8k expansion board.

It was quite easy to write basic programs that consumed all avaialble memory.

Aside from playing some basic video games, it was pretty much a useless
machine.

Uhhmmm...Sweetie, I live in chicago and have for quite some time. You obviously
never have.

Ive also met the mayor on a number of occasions, and have had the opportunity to
be social and professional with people close to him politically.

While chicago is certianly corrupt for a wide variety of reasons and causes,
the ones you listed above are nothing more than a paranoid delusional fantasy.

No wonder you like windows so much, you believe everything you read, and you
do no thinking of your own at all.

Dell don't have anything to lose by not preloading Linux on their low

Are machines perfect? The makers of the voting machines say the is a
margin of error and the winning count falls within that range.
BTW Gore won the national election by 300,000 votes but so far is losing the
Electoral college vote.

Hmmm...

Commodore Vic-20
================
3k of RAM (11k with my 8k expansion board). 1Mhz 6502. 22 column screen. And
the wonderful casette recorder for storing, retrieving my important data!

on to....

Tandy TRS-80 Model III/IV
==============================
Now, I *loved* these machines. A think they had a solid 80 column screen
(albeit monochrome) and built in 5.25" SS/SD floppy drives. A think it ran on
an old Z-80 processor at 4Mhz. The old text/blockgraphic "camping adventure"
game was pretty damn cooL!

Apple IIe
=========
This computer easily transformed me from a typical video game player to a
neophyte programmer. I learned UCSD pascal on this machine, and began the long,
tedious process of studying 6502 assembly language. I had a cheap Apple III
monochrome (green) monitor and 2 5.25" disk drives (which needed constant
adjustment). I also had a MSSoftcard Z80 board which allowed me to run an early
version of Turbo Pascal.

The coolest thing I got was a 1200 baud prometheus promodem, which got me into
the BBS scene. Frankly, it changed my whole life... :)

When I finally got my color composite monitor and 64k/80column expansion board,
I was set. Appleworks, basic, assembly, pascal, etc etc etc. This thing was a
workhorse.... then I sold it to buy a ....

Apple IIgs
==========
This is the only ancient computer that I still own and *use*. My daughter loves
it. I was basically and Apple II on steroids. It had improved graphics and
sound (hence the GS), and a whole lot more memory and speed. It came stock
(rom03) with 1MB of ram, 256k of ROM, 64k of sound RAM and a whole lotta room
for growth. The original config was the ROM03 with the 256k expansion board
(bringing it up to 1.25MB RAM), 3.5" and 5.25" disk drives, imagewriter II
printer and an applecolor 12" RGB monitor.

I eventually added a 20MB hard disk, Transwarp (bringing the speed of the unit
to 7Mhz) a PCTransporter (bringing 8088/MSDOS compatibility to the box), a 2400
baud modem and a whole lotta software...

I eventually ran a BBS on the thing, hosting lots of pirate warez (lol) on a
20MB hard disk and 2400 baud modem. Our motto was "No IBM Crap". LOL.

I now run a variant of unix on the damn thing called GNO which is really quite
cool, considering that the machine had no MMU.

Mac LC
==========
Feeling good about apple computer, I purchased an LC. What a mistake. Sold it a
few months later for a loss. Bye Bye macintosh.

(long hiatus from the computer world)....

Amstrad XT compatible
=====================
I got the itch for computers (again) and chose to purchase and old amstrad from
a teacher. Cool CGA graphics and 512k of RAM (which I upgraded to 640k). I
added an 800k 3.5" floppy to complement the 20MB MFM miniscribe hardcard that
was installed.

Bought a 2400/MNP5 baud modem, opened the newspaper to find the phone number of
a local BBS (yes, they published them back then) and began my long journey back
into the digital communications world.

Home-Built 386/40Mhz
=====================
I sold the XT box to a clueless lady who just wanted a computer to run windows.
It ran windows 3.0 (not well), but it didn't matter. She liked it. She bought
it. I took the money and funneled it into a homebuilt 386/40Mhz with a whopping
2MB of RAM and a VGA board.

I ran the video into an old IBM 1302 12" color VGA monitor.

The thing ran Windows 3.1 rather well...

This is when the upgrade path started. With a standard AT case, 30 pin
RAM/SIMMs and portable components, I upgraded my way to....

Home-Built 486/66Mhz
====================
I eventually had 8MB of RAM on this box with a mitsumi 2x CDROM, and a VLBUS
SVGA video board.

I ran OS/2 2.1 and OS/2 warp on this box, rather successfully I might add.
It was around this time that I started using internet shell accounts. Lynx
and Pine were the cool things around. I was thrilled to get one email a
week. :)

Shortly thereafter, I switched to Windows NT v3.51, because internet support
was SO MUCH BETTER.

Believe it or not, I never once used Windows 9x for anything other than games.
It has always been and always will be too unstable!

Somewhere on the upgrade path, I managed to get a hold of a real old version of
slackware linux, and proceeded to install it. What a pain in the ass. The new
installers are 10000% better than those 5 years ago :)

I have been bouncing between Redhat and WinNT/2k for a couple of years now. I
current use redhat 7 (w/patches) for my firewall/router/DNS and use Win2k for
my exchange server and domain security. I have a variety of client machines
(some win98, some 2k some RH7) that I use for various purposes.

+ A Server Installation in RedHat will wipe out every last bit of data you've

Perhaps the warning came before you expected it. I can't speak to
RedHat, but I know Debian puts up a warning of "you should back up
your data first, installing this software could wipe out everything
you've" very, very early on.
