He's talking non-interactive. With an interactive editor like Notepad
or vi, one must manually open the file into the text buffer and do
operations on it. With utilities like sed you can specify the commands
and it will just find the file, perform operations on each line of the
file, and return the command prompt. The main use of sed is in
scripting, where one wants things done automatically, or the same thing
across a series of files.

You really mean, "...adapter works properly when I boot Windows 2000

I've got the exact same card in my ThinkPad T20, and it works fine, once
you install the driver you need, regardless of Win2000 or Linux.
Go to google, search on "3c556 linux". Any of those links will help. In

MS-Word is *adequate* for 10-page documents.
But if you're writing up the corporate stockholder's report, you
better use something that doesn't choke on a piddly 50 pages.

Cygwin has a lot of tools that duplicate the unix environment, including a
POSIX layer. These allow you to compile a lot of unix software under
Windows. But, you have to contend with a lot of other barriers, such as the
fact that Windows is clunky when it comes to accessing a command line. For
example, under FreeBSD, I can switch between VC's and into and out of X with
the keyboard. Under Windows, it's very hard to manage many command line
sessions like you can with VC's under Linux, FreeBSD, or whatever.

charge more than $99, it's gonna be a tough upgrade.

But they can do it *MUCH* faster if they own Deja.....because they
can put the "grep-pers" right on the machines that are holding

Hooray for consumer choice!
Then, they can lock out all internet audio choice by having 'strategic
partners' on the web that exclusivly deal in this new proprietary
(read 'unable to port to any other platform than we choose to')
technology. Then, unless your system is blessed by Microsoft, you'll
be unable to use media on the ineternet; hell, let's expand this to
pictures, text and movies as well!
Of course, this will only be a speed bump until direct digital to digital
re-encoding with MP3 happens. I can also imagine that fun things
could happen by using Windows under VMWare with a 'signed'
SoundBlaster 16 driver and /dev/dsp... But the whole idea stinks
anyway.

But Chad, they wont work with the *media* that you want to play. It
will be a proprietary format which is encrypted to only work with
Windows media player. Who cares if you have Winamp installed? It
won't work with Winamp (in fact, if they have their way then nobody
will ever use Winamp or any other media player ever again).
Wired isn't the most reliable source, to be sure -- it's more a
soda pop science magazine than anything else, but why else would
Microsoft even invent this technology. They have never been
proponents of open standards: Direct 3D was invented to make game
developers develop for Windows, NetBIOS/NTDOM was invented to make
people buy NT servers, and now we find out that the Windows 2000
'signed driver' technology wasn't intented to make the OS more
reliable, but to give Microsoft control over media services.
Fun stuff.
