Do you mean, do you think you'll see party leaders putting their

The fact that you believe something does not make it so. It isn't about

The structure of the entire economy.

Kojin Karatani
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^----[note that the author himself is Japanese]
As you know, the Japanese economy is in serious crisis. It reached the peak of
prosperity in the 1980s, but now it is collapsing. But the reason for its success
is also the reason for its collapse. Lately, there is a predominant theory that
the postwar Japanese economic system is a continuation of the wartime regime
established in 1940. The liberal economist Yukio Noguchi calls it the "1940
Regime". According to him, the US occupation army demilitarized Japan thoroughly,
but they did not touch the bureaucratic system and the wartime systems the
bureaucrats had planned. Even the land reform implemented by the US Occupation
Army had been planned and prepared by reformist bureaucrats during the war.
That is why the wartime regime survived despite the thorough demilitarization
symbolized by Article 9 of the postwar constitution.
Basically, I agree with Noguchi's view, but I think it is wrong to call this a
wartime regime. It is nothing other than the completed fascist system, namely
total mobilization. As Ernst Junger put it, Total Mobilization is, among other
things, the abolishment of the distinction between the military and the
non-military. For Junger, soldiers are workers, and workers are soldiers.
It is well-known that Junger's essay on total mobilization deeply affected
Heidegger, but few know that the idea of total mobilization in Japan owed much
to it.
Fascism is not essentially war-oriented. Among the 20-some fascist nations
that emerged after Italy in 1923, only Germany and Japan, along with Italy
after 1938, were militaristic or invasive. Peaceful fascism was and is possible.
In essence, fascism is a counterrevolution against communism in the crisis of
capitalism. It is different from imperialism, militarism or genocide in general.
It aims at dissolving the conflicts and contradictions proper to capitalism
within the scope of capitalism. I would say Roosevelt's New Deal in America
was tinged with such a Bonarpartist counter-revolution. Anyway, the postwar
demilitarization of Japan undertaken by the United States, which took this
system for militarism, did not result in the demolition of total mobilization.
In his postwar thesis The Logic and Psychology of Ultranationalism, Maruyama
Masao maintained that Japanese fascism was "fascism from above" whereas the
German and Italian forms were "fascisms from below" since they had gone
through democratic revolutions in the past. This may sound something like
admiration for Italian and German fascism because they were modern and
democratic. But even Maruyama could not deny the fact that since 1938, the
Konoe cabinet had some elements that were close to Italian and German
fascism. If so, then we must say that the postwar democratization of Japan
did not dismantle Japanese fascism, but actually completed it.

A number of issues arise here; one of them is in fact laziness.
Two letters "mv" as opposed to four("move")or six("rename").
Ditto for "cp". Great for touch typists.
However, there's also the issue of "word memory". To put it
simply, the "word" "mv" is far less likely to be confusing
because it has precisely one meaning -- namely, "move an object
on a Unix system". If one is presented with a "MOVE" or "COPY",
one has to now think a little more. Quick, what options does
"MOVE" have? Does it move files or directories? Or is it referring
to an obscure terrorist group, an action done once every 5 (3?) years
or so by most Americans, or a simple generic translation from one point
to another in an abstract coordinate space?

And this is a problem? It's bad enough that on NT, typing
cd C:\Program Files\
actually works. (It's even worse that one has to type in
all those characters.)
I do have to laud NT for its explanatory filenames, but that's just
ridiculous; they could have just called it "Programs". On
Windows2000 they probably changed it anyway; I know they changed
the location of C:\WINNT\Profiles\[username]\Desktop to
C:\Documents & Settings\something (I forget now).

This is true. Maybe we should get rid of it and go all GUI instead.
That'll learn us to be lazy.
:-)

Does make it nice, especially when the server's in a locked room
with very limited physical access. Note also that the server might
be a Cray YMP or a Connection machine, with more power in its
little transistor finger than a thousand PCs spread across
an office. :-)

Ah, so you're advocating laziness! :-) Perhaps it's merely a question
of presenting the notion correctly; instead of "laziness", one could
think of "a solid foundation of functionality one doesn't have to
think hard about but can simply use to further one's goals". :-)
Of course, that phrase is a little hard to think about.... :-)
so I'll be lazy and borrow your term "laziness".... :-)
