Hehehe.... you're catching on real quick! That's what I told my
pointy-haired boss back in 91 (not to move over to a lot of cheap PCs).
We had a nice VAX system and a lot of terminals. It was easy to roll
your own on a VAX and give the customers what they wanted without any
hassles or worries.

Naming lots of specific software is not a convincing argument. Of course
there is lots of windows only software---windows has something like 90%
of the desktop market. Most of the companies making that software would
make a linux version tomorrow, if linux suddenly had even 20% of the
desktop.
The more convincing argument is to look for areas where one os or another
has *no* apps, (or maybe where they are prohibitively expensive). So, for
most catagories of software, is linux lacking? No, I do not believe so.
Office software is available. Multimedia software is available. Document
processing and viewing software is available. Games are available. Where
is the weakness? Some may not have all the "features" of their windows
counterparts, but if you really need those features, you prolly would
choose to use windows. For most people who don't need all of Word's
features, StarOffice, Koffice, or AbiWord should work just fine, and for
much less money. It is also worth noting that many "full-featured"
Windows apps do not have some basic features that linux users take for
granted.
Also, Windows is more and more becoming an MS only platform for any
non-os software that MS sees fit to write. How many office suites are
widely used on Windows? How many browsers? How many mp3 players? How many
movie players? If I use windows but don't want to use MS software, my
options are severely limited, aren't they? How many will there be 5 years
from now? (Fewer is my guess)
What is a "commercial level" application? Does the home user need those?
Or are we talking about specific business sectors?
Finally, most winvocates ignore the fact that all the great windows
software costs money and doesn't come with the os (although it might come
bundled with the computer when you buy it). My Mandrake install included
almost everything I want or need, usually with at least two or three
choices for each type of software. I can install the one I like, or all
of them and try them out. Windows gives you almost nothing usable and
anything it does give you usually comes without a choice.
The whole software availability argument just underscores the big
difference in worldviews between windows advocates and linux users. In
that each is comparing apples to oranges, the winvocates argument is
based on, if not FUD, at least misunderstanding of the issue.

In how many *months* compared to YEARS of solid unix performance, going back
to before Microsoft even had an OS, let alone the parade of crash-happy
versions of DOS and Windows.
