not all 3-button mice have scroll-wheels.

that's a rather LATE invention.

Selling boxed sets is a way of covering the cost of the media. The retail
price of box-plus-manual covers the costs of making them.

So how do you sell support? Well, first you consider where your costs are.
Your costs are keeping support geeks on staff to answer support calls. i.e.
*salary*. They are only indirectly related to how many boxes you sell, or
how many incidents you deal with. If both of those values are zero, you
still have pay your staff, so the obvious model is subscription based,
which is how most support contracts are sold. It also has the added
advantage of encouraging the vendor to make their stuff as reliable as
possible, which the incident model doesn't.

Right, that should be OK for us. I see the automation stuff as a door
for beginners, see?

BTW, I don't maintain my Windoze anymore: I reload an image and install
the game I want to play.

That `switch' still exists in one form or another. The Linux 3-button
mouse HOWTO is chock full of wonderful trivia on 3 button mice.

Some of the mics have a solder contact (or in rare cases jumper) inside
to serve the purpose of this switch.

Others also will go in to this mode if you hold the middle button down
during a power on, and often during when a reset code is sent to the
mouse.

The very cheap 3 button mice will often work flawlessly when put in to
the proper mode, but in standard MS mode, they do broken things like not
sending button up events when the middle button is released.

These are the kind of really cheap mice one has hanging around, with no
idea where they came from and certainly naver had a driver disk mfor the
3rd button in Windows.

Same here. It seems to happen about every 6-8 months with Pete. Every
time he asks people to prove the same thing they did last time, feigning
ignorance. It wears a little thin after a while.

But is there a political aspect if the problem?
Should more and more people use Linux?

There was this article http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/19239.html
"MS-built UK 'Government Gateway' locks out non-MS browsers", etc etc
etc.

But for me and you, I agree.

That's a good one. This was true for a long time.
With MSWin you recognize the value of your time mostly in panic.

That's true, games is Windoze's last resort, I guess. It's the only
thing I still use it for, besides on university machines.
I am glad that my favorite game (Descent3) is available for Linux.

Know the story from the Bible, where Jesus compares building on Sand
with building on rock?
Building on sand is what Windoze is all about, fast, easy and like that
tower in Pisa, Italy.
