thats got it, although now it says uncompressing linux, gives the dots, but 
then doesnt change screen mode or print kernel messages. It still boots cos 
when i log in (blindly) and type reboot it reboots. Even though i cant see 
anything. Theres no strange mode changes being used, the same as before when 
it worked. i take it this is a kernel error (ive forgotten to config 
something?). any ideas?

no but i will, when i get above working. as i remember though its a strange 
parse error (??) and lots of warnings.
