I use a mixed environment. One of the editors I like to use for Windows is
UltraEdit. It allows for split screens, tabs for different files and
supports viewing and editing files that are in use by other applications (It
notices when a file changes and prompts to load the new file). It also
supports customizable syntax highlighting for ANY file type based on file
extension with C++, HTML, Java and others already configured.
The bad news is that it's a Windows app. It is also not freeware. It is
shareware timeout after install with splash screens. Hey, it's just a
recommendation, throw soft stones...
For a unix solution try "screen" and that will allow you to set up virtual
terminals that you can "tab" between" in a single terminal session. Screens
can also be left open between sessions and resumed later. I use that
feature for a couple systems I work on with poor connections. It can be a
bit of a CPU hog, but it supports key mappings (virtually aliases) and
multiple users (I could never get that to work).
