I have found (more or less) an answer to my own question:

    is the "Linux Programmers Bounce Point" and it has some good references
including a reference for glibc.

    The documentation in man is not always reasonable. It is good enough,
most of the time.  I've found info so counter-intuitive for me that I have to
be desperate to use it.
