I'm a bit deceived to see that you haven't got any reply since a week.
That's why I do it, even if I haven't a direct solution to your problem.
I know from my short experience with Slackware that the included
information in the distribution (it was slackware 3.1) isn't really
exhaustive. For me, the solution was to move to Redhat (4.2, a bit
better, but not much), and finally to Debian (there you have all the
possible choices within the install procedure)
On the other hand, maybe you just have overseen something in the kernel
recompile procedure. It's not just "make config". I don't have the exact
information at hand, but I think there is also someting like "make
clean" you should do. And there are also options like "make menuconfig"
or "make xconfig" which can make your life easier.
Hope this helps a bit. If not, write me again, then I'll look for the
exact info.
