They wrote it that way for security reasons. I remember that someone
(RedHat list, maybe?) rewrote the code to let him do it. It was
apparently a minor code change, and very self-explanatory. It's probably
just a sub-function that refuses the name "root," better yet, it might
check the user ID, in case someone changed their root name. Has anybody
tried that to see if it's ID or name?

As for the code snippet, I haven't looked at it yet, though I was
planning to. If you find exactly where it is let me know.
