i tackled the exact same problem today.
the installation went fine but i could never get past the LI -.
after much grumbling and fiddling about, i later discovered that lilo
can only be stored on the first two drives. in my case, i had it in
/dev/hdc (with /dev/hda occupied by linux and /dev/hdb,by my cdrom
drive)so switching the cables fixed it for me.

no, it should be in LBA mode. choose the lilo linear option
during the install and all should go well.
