Ok dave,
I switched in this a bit late, so I hope I didn't miss anything.
pleze send me your syslog.conf.
what is in /etc/hosts ?
what is in /etc/ppp/ ?
especially send me the /etc/ppp/options file (if it exists)

that's ok. It happens every time you reboot your system or stop/start your
syslogd.
Just in case:
Note that syslogd won't take any changes from syslog.conf unless you
restart it.
Note that if you delete your logfiles while syslogd is running you'll have
to restart it, too.
You have a local network, you want to connect to the internet? Or is it a
standalone pc without network card?

did you try [EMAIL PROTECTED]'s : ps xa | grep logd ?
what results did you get?

that's all 4 now,

raven
