You should already be able to read most dirs and files on your
system. The ones you're now unable to read are the ones that are for
some reasons restricted for normal users. Most of these are restricted
for privacy or security reasons, privacy being the far bigger part of
the two. (Would you like some other user to be able to read your mail?)
So, if you can't read some directory, you *should* probably be root to
read it. :-)
