This is definitely not the cause of your problem. I have been running
2.1.xxx kernels for a while and that message always appears. It is
easy to change in the source, but I haven't got motivated enough to do
it on my machine.

Are you sure that SLIP is in the kernel? Are all your networking
utilities up to date with what the kernel recommends? Try using diald
with debug=0x0008.
