Due to our mail server crashing, I don't have Mike's original
message, so I don't know if there was any other useful information
in there.

I'm running RH5.1, 2.0.34-0.6 kernel with /dev/modem linked to
/dev/cua1 (yup, I know...)
diald -0.16-3 runs happily (from an RPM I found).

The system log reads:
Jan 22 22:59:26 pingu diald[2235]: Running connect (pid = 2240).
Jan 22 22:59:26 pingu chat[2240]: abort on (BUSY)
Jan 22 22:59:26 pingu chat[2240]: abort on (ERROR)
Jan 22 22:59:26 pingu chat[2240]: abort on (NO CARRIER)
Jan 22 22:59:26 pingu chat[2240]: abort on (NO DIALTONE)
Jan 22 22:59:26 pingu chat[2240]: abort on (Invalid Login)
Jan 22 22:59:26 pingu chat[2240]: abort on (Login incorrect)
etc ...

0.98 compiles with some warnings about pointer types.

Here's the output of the system log...
Jan 22 22:58:34 pingu diald[2217]: Trigger: icmp       161.73.1.2/257
192.168.0.1/257
Jan 22 22:58:34 pingu diald[2217]: Calling site 192.168.0.2
Jan 22 22:58:35 pingu diald[2217]: Running connector (pid = 2227).
Jan 22 22:58:38 pingu diald[2217]: child process 2227 terminated withsignal 11
Jan 22 22:58:38 pingu diald[2217]: Connect script failed.
Jan 22 22:58:39 pingu diald[2217]: Delaying 30 seconds before clear to
dial.

Chat doesn't even write to the log.

Adding diagnostics to modem.c...

mon_syslog(LOG_INFO, "child trace point 8");
setenv("MODEM", current_dev, 1);
mon_syslog(LOG_INFO, "child trace point 9");

trace point 8 is reached. 9 is not: the process simply exits.

Removing the calls to setenv seems to make everything work.

Any ideas?
