Hi!
I have had this "hang-up" problem. It happens, because some programs
simply freeze while waiting for a DNS reply for some stuff, e.g.
mailserver, proxy server, news servers.
Apart from rewriting the programs, which would be the "correct" method
to solve this problem, you can install a local mail (e.g. sendmail),
news and proxy (e.g. squid) server somewhere in the local network,
perhaps on your own computer, and adjust configuration appropriately.
