Problem getting diald to work

I have been trying to get diald to work.  Everything seems to work okay, 
except, once the connection is established, dialed forks pppd.  The next line
of the messages log says "child died with signal 1" and shows the PID of pppd.

Does anyone have any idea what might be going on?
